General Sir Robert Onesiphorus Bright GCB


Robert Onesiphorus Bright was born on 7 Jul 1823, and educated at Winchester. He was commissioned into the 19th Regiment in 1843 and served in Bulgaria. He commanded the 2nd Brigade of the Light Division in the Crimean War and in 1863 was appointed CO of the 1st Battalion 19th, commanding them in India. He commanded the 1st Brigade Hazara Field Force in 1868 and commanded a Field Force in the 2nd Afghan War of 1878-80. He was appointed CB in 1881 and upgraded to GCB in 1894. On 27 Oct 1886 he was made Colonel of the 19th Regiment, and promoted to General on 1 Apr 1887. He was married to Catherine Miles, daughter of Sir William Miles Bt. They lived in Guildford and had 3 sons and 5 daughters. Sir Robert died on 15 Nov 1896. The photo is a detail from a group of officers of the 1st battalion taken c1865 at Kasauli. He sits in the middle, as CO of the battalion, dressed in the undress scarlet frock worn in hot climates. He has medal ribbons for the Crimean War.
