Major Roger Chapman MBE


John Roger Chapman did his National Service basic training in the Richmond Depot in 1957 before taking a regular commission in the Green Howards from RMA Sandhurst. He served with the Regiment for 16 years.  In 1965, with the rank of captain he was appointed instructor at Sandhurst. In 1968 he took part in the Great Abbai Expedition, in the upper reaches of the Nile, with intrepid explorer Captain John Blashford-Snell. He went on to be Director of Plans for Operation Drake (1977-81) and Operation Raleigh (1983-90). In 1983 he was awarded the Ness Award by the Royal Geographical Society. After a career in the expedition world, he returned to North Yorkshire to become the curator of the Green Howards Museum for 10 years until 2006.
