Colours 1848

Cannon’s Historical Records of the 19th Regiment of Foot has this coloured print of the Queen’s and Regimental Colours. The dimensions were 6’6” flying and 6’ on the pike. The Union Flag, complete with the Cross of St Patrick, as of 1801, is the Queen’s Colour. From 1839 the regimental number was to be in Roman Numerals rather than Arabic. Battle honours were permitted from 1820 onwards but in 1844 there was an order that the Queen’s Colour was to have nothing but the number and crown above. The 19th Regiment was famous for its green facings and the Regimental Colour was green with the small union flag in the canton. The central device had a wreath of roses, thistles and shamrocks with Victoria’s crown above. The regiment had no battle honours at this time. The first ones they received were ALMA INKERMAN and SEBASTOPOL on 16 Oct 1855. They did not receive the honour for MALPLAQUET until 13 Mar 1882.
