Presentation of New Colours 1963

This painting by Colonel P E Hutchins depicts the presentation of new Colours to the Green Howards on 20 March 1963. The guest of honour who made the presentation was the Princess Royal. This was Mary, the daughter of George V and aunt of Queen Elizabeth. She had been Princess Royal since 1932 and held that title until her death on 28 March 1965, two years after this ceremony. It must have been a cold or wet day as the ceremony was held in the drill hall. The painting was presented to the Princess, but on her death it was donated to the Regimental museum.
