Private Jack Hall DCM MM

James ‘Jack’ Hall was a friend of Sergeant William McNally VC. They were both from Murton, County Durham, both coal miners and both served in the Green Howards. The picture is the right-hand side of a photo for which he posed with McNally. It is the only known image of him.

Jack Hall was born on 26 Jan 1893. He worked in Murton Colliery before joining up. He was awarded the DCM for bravery during fighting near Armentieres. On 19 Dec 1915 the Yorkshire Regiment was suffering heavy bombardment from German guns. In the shelling, a wall collapsed onto two men, one of whom was Jack Robinson, Hall’s brother-in-law. Jack Hall braved enemy fire to dig them out of the rubble. He was also awarded the Military Medal for another act of bravery but details of this are not available as the paperwork went missing in the WW2 Blitz. Jack Hall lived to the age of 75 despite the fact that he lost part of his lung due to shrapnel. He died on 17 March 1968. He was married and had four children; Jack, James, Mary and Irene. He is buried in the cemetery of St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Murton.
