Green Howards Officers 1900

This is a page taken from Major M L Ferrar’s account of The Green Howards in the Boer War.  The group includes Lieutenant Jarvis (top left) who arrived in Bloemfontein on 17 Mar, three days after the arrival of the Battalion HQ. Jarvis commanded C Company who were detailed to remain on Kitchener’s Kop after the others had joined Lord Roberts’ march to Bloemfontein. Major J A Fearon sits in the middle. He commanded the battalion temporarily after Lt-Col Bowles was wounded on 18 Feb. Next to him, without his helmet on, is Major M L Ferrar, the author of the book and commander of A Company. On the other side of Major Fearon is Captain C Organ the Quartermaster. The adjutant, Captain G Christian, stands at the back in the middle. Standing on the extreme right, in field service cap, is Lt T W Stansfield who later joined the Mounted Infantry section. He and Capt Christian were awarded the DSO at the end of the war. The battalion left Bloemfontein on 19 Mar so this photo was taken around 18 Mar 1900.
