Field Marshal The Rt Hon Peter Anthony Inge, Baron Inge KG GCB


Peter Anthony Inge was born in Croydon on 5 Aug1935. He was the son of Raymond Albert Inge and Grace Du Rose. He was educated at Wrekin College, and after Sandhurst was commissioned into the Green Howards, in 1956. He served with them in Hong Kong, Germany, and Malaya during the Emergency. He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel, commanding the 1st Battalion in 1974. He took over as Colonel of the Green Howards on 19 July 1982 when he held the rank of brigadier. He was ADC to the Queen in Feb 1991 and appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in 1992. In that year he was made Chief of the General Staff and promoted to field marshal on 15 Mar 1994. His colonelcy of the regiment ended on 31 Nov 1994.  After advising the government during the war in Bosnia he retired in 1997. He was made Knight of the Garter on 32 April 2001. He was a member of the Butler Inquiry that declared the intelligence on Iraq possessing WMDs to be flawed. In 1960 he married Letitia Thornton-Berry; they have 2 daughters. The portrait is by June Mendoza painted in 2004 and hangs in the Green Howards museum. It shows him in a general officer’s frock coat and the robes and insignia of a Knight of the Garter.
