The Deerslayer The first of the Natty Bumppo 'Leatherstocking' novels in chronological terms - although it was actually the last of the series written by Cooper. It is based on the pioneer woodsman who hunts around Otsego Lake in New York State but who falls foul of some hostile Native Americans.

The Last of the Mohicans This is the most famous of the Natty Bumppo 'Leatherstocking' Novels. It is set in 1757 during the early stages of the French and Indian Wars between the British and French. It concerns itself with an Indian massacre (with French connivance) of a British force. Some of the women captured in this massacre need freeing by the last of the Mohicans.

The Pathfinder The third (chronologically) of the Natty Bumppo 'Leatherstocking' Novels. Natty and his friend, the Mohican chief Chingachgook, find themselves amongst Tuscarora and Iroquois Indians over conflicts about land and love in the 1750s.

The Pioneers This was actually the first book written about Natty Bumppo although it was set after the British have left America in 1793 - but still some of their legacy carries on. The competing claims of Native Americans, Tory loyalists, roving hunters, and visionary cultivators are pitted against one another in Northern New York State.

The Prairie The last of the Natty Bumppo 'Leatherstocking' books, sees Natty coming to terms with the full impact of the penetration of the American west (wll after the British have left): the displacement of the Indians, the destruction of nature, and the creation of a just society. Natty is the spokesman for the conservation of the natural environment. But as his physical prowess declines he is unable to thwart the despoilers.

The Spy Set in the Revolutionary War, divided loyalties strain the household of Mr Wharton and his daughters. Some of the protagonists wear their allegiance on their sleeves but others seem more circumspect.

Lionel Lincoln: The Leaguer of Boston Set in the early stages of the Revolutionary War, a young British officer comes back to the city of his birth; Boston. He gets swept up in romance but also witnesses the precarious position of the British as the Bunker Hill debacle unfolds before his eyes.

The Pilot: A Tale of the Sea It tells about the life of a naval pilot during the Revolutionary wars. To fulfill a secret mission, Cooper chooses one of America's early naval heroes as his protagonist, but leaves only clues as to who this might be. We follow our hero and his allies through twisting and often improbable plots.
