Natives of the Caribee Islands

This 1778 engraving entitled "Natives of the Caribee, feasting on human flesh" conveys the image that Europeans had for the original inhabitants of the Caribbean Islands. This helped justify to themselves their savagery and dealings with the native peoples. This engraving was from John Hamilton Moore's Voyages and Travels. Although it was fairly anachronistic by the time of its publication, readers felt that it represented a truth.
