The Departure of Drake in the 'Golden Hind'

This painting by Frank Henry Mason shows Drake about to embark on what would become his Circumnavigation of the World. This journey whetted the appetites of many English mariners who were amazed to see the treasure and spices that he brought back and enthused to believe that they could challenge the primacy of the Portuguese and Spanish in the maritime trading business.
