Maria Merian was a Dutch wildlife artist who painted the wildlife, plants and insects of the Dutch colonies in the 17th Century. She encapsulated the exotic foreigness of the wildlife she came into contact with and its sheer abundance in the rainforest. She was an important femaile scientist and many of her works are still in print today. |
