Map of Muscovy

This is a map prepared by Anthony Jenkinson and Gerard de Jode and published in 1593. It was intended to show the extent to which large, navigable rivers criss-crossed Russia and seemed to hold out the opportunity of linking the Arctic Ocean with the seas of the Orient. The rivers are given a very generous scale to hint at the possibility of trade, but in reality the geography and politics of the region made it all but impossible to conduct sizable trade via this route.
