Marshal of the RAF The Right Honourable Lord Newall GCB OM GCMG CBE AM


Born on 15th Feb 1886 in India, he was commissioned into the Royal Warwickshires on 16th Aug 1905 and served on the North West Frontier. He was a lieutenant by 1908 and transferred to the 2nd Gurkhas in 1909. In 1911 he took private flying lessons and had earned his wings in the RFC by 1913. He was made Chief of the Air Staff in 1937 and gained great distinction in World War 2. He was the 6th Governor of New Zealand from 1941 to 1946. He died on 30th Nov 1963.

The last decoration AM was the Albert Medal which he earned while in the RFC. He had made the decision to command from the ground which caused his fellow flying officers to question his bravery. When a building caught fire be walked in to save valuable equipment and was awarded the Albert medal for his action.
