Sir Walter Egerton had been Governor of Lagos Colony since 1903. The colonial office was in the process of amalgamating the Lagos Colony with the protectorate of Southern Nigeria, and in August 1904 appointed Egerton as High Commissioner for the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. In this photograph Egerton is on the extreme right with his wife being on the left.
