Zulu Hut Tax

This photograph was taken in 1894 and shows the chiefs from the Umfolozi district assembling in order to pay their hut tax. This tax was a real burden and demonstrated to the Zulus how they had lost their independence to British control. In this particular picture, they are waiting to pay their taxes to Mr Maxwell the magistrate in charge of their area.
