Battle of Shanghai

The Japanese started the expansion of their empire with an attack on Shanghai in 1932. Shanghai was a Chinese city with important international concessions within it - which can clearly be seen on the map of Shanghai below. The British had long taken a role in the administration and policing of the city but stepped aside as Japanese soldiers attacked in 1932 and again in 1937.
