HMS Pinafore

Gilbert and Sullivan's 1878 comic opera HMS Pinafore represented a new way of bringing the high art of opera to a more popular audience. It chimed in very well with the Music Hall tradition and drew on many imperial and patriotic themes. Gilbert and Sullivan's plays became wildly popular and were exported throughout the Empire and beyond.
