The turn of the century saw some groups advocate plans for an imperial federation with a federal parliament or government based in London. Canada and Australia appeared to provide a blueprint for how to achieve a federal model. The stumbling block appeared to be the British parliament itself which was loathe to dilute its own powers and large swathes of the British public who did not wish to subsidise any new organisation nor end up paying more for their goods and food by limiting trade and imposing customs duties on imports. |
