A Glimpse of the Enemy, Peninsular War


This picture by William Barnes Wollen shows two troppers of the 16th Light Dragoons on a scouting mission. Napoleon's attempt to seize control of Spain and Portugal backfired spectacularly as a nasty, long running guerilla war erupted. The Peninsular War provided an opportunity for the British to provide troops, equipment and money to help bleed Napoleon's forces directly.
