Venus Fort

Venus Fort in Tahiti is a wonderful example of how much the Royal Navy was involved in the cutting edge of scientific enquiry and endeavour. James Cook's voyage to the South Seas was primarily to track Venus across the face of the Sun and so help calculate the size of the Solar System. The expedition was also instrumental in mapping much of the Pacific and Southern Oceans.
