Virginia's Tobacco Merchants

This is an interesting picture showing Virginia's Tobacco Merchants. Tobacco saved the colony by providing a relatively light, local crop which could be sold in Europe for a high price. It may not have been as profitable as the spice trade, but it was certainly profitable enough. The image also hints at the role of slaves in this tobacco economy. Slavery would become a crucial feature of Virginian society in the years to come.
