The Gordons

Privates, Marching Order 1939

At the beginning of World War 2 the uniforms had changed little since the last war. The khaki doublet with 5 brass buttons now had brass collar badges. The sporran was no longer worn in this order of dress and the hose were worn with puttees instead of spats. The khaki Tam o'Shanter cap that came into wear around 1915 was much larger than the modern version that developed in the late 20th century. This photo shows the Gordon Highlanders marching to Aberdeen station to join the BEF in France in 1939.
