Officer, India 1886

The regiment were sent to South Africa from India in 1881 but returned later that year to be stationed at Secunderabad until 1886. This photo of a watercolour by Wymer in the officer's mess at Tidworth shows an officer in summer dress in India. The tunic is of lightweight material with gold braid on the collar and cuffs. White helmets were worn in India instead of the fur busby, but the cap lines were still worn, around the neck, hanging down the back and hooked up at the front. They were not attached to the helmet. He has the dress pouch-belt which is laced with gold and has a central stripe of yellow silk. The chains and pickers are silver with a gilt royal crest badge and gilt 'hawk'. The sword-belt is worn around the waist, under the tunic and has a plain black sabretache attached.
