5th Dragoon Guards


Sir Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe Bt, 7th Lord Calthorpe KCB


Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe was the 4th son of Frederick the 4th Baron Calthorpe. His mother was Lady Charlotte, daughter of the 6th Duke of Beaufort. He was born in 1831 and joined the army as an officer in the 8th Hussars in 1849. In 1855 he was a brevet major, ADC to Lord Raglan in the Crimea. In 1861 he was commanding officer of the 5th Dragoon Guards, until 1869. In 1862 he married Eliza Maria, the widowed daughter of a naval officer. They had two sons and two daughters. He was the first chairman of the Isle of Wight County Council.. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-General and was Colonel of the 5th DG from 1892 until his death on 16th Nov 1912.
