| Van der Byl joined the 8th Hussars in 1898 and spent most of his career as a regimental officer. He was appointed to the staff and made Commandant of the Senior Officer's School at Chatham and was Commanding Officer of the Nowshera Brigade. He was Colonel of the 8th Hussars for 18 years from 1930 until he retired in 1948. He died on 15th August 1952. |
