Captured Sea Elephant, Port Stanley, 1901

This picture from 1901 harks back to the blubber and seal meat that used to drive the economy in the 19th Century. Whale and seal meat were no longer required by passing ships as tinned foods and refrigeration meant that fresh food was no longer as essential as it used to be. However, it is still likely that the local population would have utilised this particular resource that ended up on their doorstep.
