Ngwamachi' (Ibrahim Nagwamatse) - the destroyer - the Emir of Kontagora In his first reign (1880–1901), Kontagora became notorious for slave raids that severely depopulated the surrounding region and left numerous walled towns in ruins. Ibrahim’s capture of the Zarian town of Birnin Gwari in 1899 forced the emir of Zaria to seek the protection of the British, a move that brought the first great Fulani emirate under British control. After Ibrahim threatened the British post at Jebba in 1900, British forces under Captain Abadie occupied Kontagora town (1901) and removed him from office. He was reinstalled as emir in 1906 for his second reign, his territory, which had been incorporated as Kontagora province, and his powers were greatly reduced. The Emir died in 1929.
