This photograph shows Nancy Astor receiving a delegation of the Primrose League as they endorse her outside her home at 3, Elliot Terrace on Plymouth Hoe. Standing as a Conservative, the Primrose League found her to be a a natural ally in promoting their core beliefs and the fact that she was Britain's first female MP added even more import to the relationship. Many politicians and commentators, on all sides of the political spectrum, underestimated the political conservatism of many of Britai's first female voters. It should also be remembered that until 1928 only women over the age of 30 could vote which perhaps amplified this conservatism yet more. |
