A Splendid Little Colony: British Singapore 1819 - 1963

William Farquhar

William Farquhar, the first British Resident and Commandant of colonial Singapore, 1819 – 1823.

Like many other British colonies, Singapore was promptly given a European imprint. From her founder, early leaders and developers, the settlement was thrust into the European century, though it relied heavily on Asian labour and manpower. The dynamic interaction between East and West would continue to characterise the colony’s footsteps for many decades to come. Even as we approach the 200th anniversary of her founding, the query is still made – Is Singapore an Asian or a Western city?
