Surgeon Major William D Cattell


William Cattell was the regimental Surgeon Major (promoted to that rank on 24 Mar 1874) of the 10th Hussars from 11 Dec 1872 until 1879. He served with them in the Second Afghan War of 1878-79 and in this photo he posed with other medical officers at Safed Sung May in 1879. He was part of the Peshawar Valley Field Force. He wears a blue uniform with gold laced breeches and the 10th Hussar tent hat. Prior to his service with the 10th he was surgeon for the 2nd Battalion 20th Regiment in South Africa and Mauritius. He had also served in the Crimean War with the 5th Dragoon Guards. He was married to Caroline Pickering Goodricke on 24 Jan 1867 in Durban. In 1881 he was posted to the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot. From 1882-86 he worked in Nova Scotia. He retired in 1889 and lived in Hove, Sussex. He died there on 20 Mar 1919.
