James Graves Kelly was born on 28 Nov 1843 and entered the army at the age of 20. He reached the rank of Brevet Colonel in 1895 having served in the Hazara and Miranzai expeditions in 1891 and the Chitral expedition in 1895. He was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). He died on 20 June 1923. The photo shows the Colonel in regimental scarlet uniform with field officer’s braid on his gold-laced blue collar. He has a crown and two stars on each shoulder cord, denoting full colonel rank, and his CB decoration is prominent next to his medals.
