When Queen Victoria came to the throne it was decided to change the waist-belt plate worn on the chest of those officers of the 79th wearing the kilt, i.e. not mounted. The design is less ornate than the previous plate worn since c1820. It is of frosted gilt with a crown and wreath of thistles encircling the Roman numerals LXXIX. This pattern can be seen in the portrait of Ensign Robertson 1841.
