The Honourable Laderdale Maule was born at Brechin Castle on 27 Mar 1807, the second son of William Ramsay Maule, 1st Lord Panmure of Brechin and Navar, and grandson of the Earl of Dalhousie. Lauderdale was the younger brother of Fox Maule, also an officer in the 79th Cameron Highlanders. Lauderdale entered the army as an ensign in the 39th Regiment, on 24 Aug 1825. He exchanged to the 95th and with the rank of captain exchanged again into the 79th on 21 Aug 1835.
He was promoted to major in 1840 and lieutenant-colonel on 14 June 1842. He Commanded the regiment from 14 June 42 for 10 years, relinquishing command on 23 Dec 1852. He was Member of Parliament for Forfarshire from 1852 until 1854 and Deputy Lieutenant for Forfarshire. Although retired from the army he was appointed Surveyor-General of the Ordnance in the Crimean War. He contracted cholera in Varna and died in Turkey in 1854 whilst on the staff of the Eastern army as Assistant Adjutant General. His name is inscribed on a large memorial in Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh.
