The Honourable Fox Maule was born at Brechin Castle, Angus, on 22 April 1801. His father was William Maule, 1st Baron Panmure, and his grandfather was George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie. Fox was named after Charles James Fox, the Whig Party leader. Although he served in the army he is better known for his political career. He was MP for Perth and for a while, Elgin Burghs. He held several posts in the government including Secretary of State for War during the Crimean War. He was also Keeper of the Privy Seal for Scotland and was active in the Free Church of Scotland.
The portrait shows him in the kilted dress uniform of the 79th Cameron Highlanders which he joined on 3 June 1819. He was promoted to lieutenant on 29 July 1824 and the portrait probably dates around that time. He was a captain two years later, on 8 April 1826 but he retired from the army on 5 April 1831. His younger brother, the Hon. Lauderdale Maule, was an officer in the 79th from 1835 and commanded the regiment for 10 years from 1842.
Fox entered the House of Commons in 1835. In April 1852 his father died and he inherited the title 2nd Baron Panmure, and from December 1860 he inherited the title 11th Earl of Dalhousie, changing his name to Maule-Ramsay. He was married in 1831, to The Hon. Montague Abercromby but they had no children. He died at Brechin Castle on 6 July 1874.
