The regiment retained their home service dress uniforms for ceremonial occasions whilst serving in India up until 1871. The most senior Non-Commissioned Officers posed for this photo in either 1866 or 1867 while they were stationed at Roorkee or Delhi. The NCO on the left is the Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant with a star badge over his four stripes. The RSM is fourth from the left with a crown badge over his stripes and a plaid brooch similar to that worn by the officers. The status of Warrant Officer was not introduced until 1881. The Pipe-Major is third from the right in his glengarry dress cap with eagle feather. His rank was down-graded to Sergeant Piper in 1881. The status of four of the NCOs is demonstrated by the method of carrying the broadsword on a white shoulder-belt. The other three have broadswords carried on slings attached to their waist-belt. The Pipe-Major does not have a sword but does have a dirk. The officers of the Cameron Highlanders posed in the same location at around this time.
