The details of how the valise was worn high on the back are demonstrated in these sketches of a Colour sergeant. The straps on the top of the valise are coiled up but were there to strap the rolled greatcoat. This front view shows a rectangular brass shoulder-belt plate but without detail. The rank badge is discussed in the previous sketch of the Colour sergeant. The wearing of the badge on both sleeves is not seen in paintings of all ranks made by R R MacIan in 1852 so either the practice ended by that time or it was confined to flank companies only.
