| The French artist Auguste Raffet (1804-1860) visited Gibraltar in 1847 and was allowed to make studies of the uniforms and equipment of the 79th Cameron Highlanders. The original drawings are not available, their whereabouts are unknown to me, but military uniform experts CCP Lawson (1880-1967) and Percy Sumner (d.1950) were given the opportunity to make their own copies which are shown here. Other coloured drawings of theirs can be seen in the Band and Drummers section, and the Pipers section. In most cases, the Sumner copies note the date that Raffet made the sketch. The Lawson copies come from the Brown Digital Repository, a collection of 26 watercolours, kept in a red cloth portfolio produced by Lawson in London in 1958. |
