Percy Sumner’s copies of Raffet’s sketches have the date 3 Aug 1847 and state that these are details of a sergeant of the Grenadier Company in Gibraltar. The two head profiles wear the feather bonnet which for grenadiers were 14 inches high, compared to the battalion companies who had 12 inch high bonnets. The sketches show the badge on the left side of the feather bonnet which is a white metal circle with St Andrew and his saltire-shaped cross.The same device is used on the sergeant’s waist-belt. The sporran is of brown goat hair with five black tassels. The cantle is brass with 79 within a thistle wreath in the centre.
