There is no explanation with these drawings but the sporran was the pattern worn by the rank-and-file. The dirk is too plain to be worn by an officer and is in fact a piper’s or musician’s dirk. The two views of the broadsword hilt are also those of a piper or at least a pipe-major. Apart from officers the only others that carried a sword at this stage were warrant officers. These were drawn by Percy Sumner, copied from Raffet’s sketches made at Gibraltar in 1847
