Three officers of the regiment were mounted on parade, the commanding officer, the second-in-command, and the adjutant. This sketch of Colonel Hon.Lauderdale Maule’s horse shows the shabraque worn beneath the saddle. It was most likely to be a much darker green than that illustrated in Percy Sumner’s copy of Raffet’s coloured drawing. The border of the shabraque has gold lace with scarlet scalloped edges and there is a small embroidered thistle in the rear corner.
The saddle has leather pistol holsters on the front, covered by a black bearskin. The lower right corner of the illustration shows a gilt or brass bit-boss which has a thistle device and crown above. Another detail shows an unusual method of connecting the breast collar to the martingale. The date of the sketch made at Gibraltar by Raffet was 3 Nov 1847
