Sumner’s copy of Raffet’s sketch of a musket and a Highlander’s hose simply shows a soldier’s 1842 pattern percussion musket with the white leather sling attached as for a parade. The only caption is the phrase ‘browned barrel’. The hose were worn so that they reached just over half way up the calf, kept in place with a red ribbon tied on top of the hose in a complex bow.
