General Evans was the first Colonel of the 8th Gurkha Rifles, appointed in 1904. He was born in London on 8 Dec 1841, the son of Frederick Mullet Evans of Whitefriars. He was educated at Fordington, and at the age of 16 was given a commission in the East India Company on 28 June 1858. He served in the 6th Bengal European Infantry and then transferred to the 104th Bengal Fusiliers where he was appointed adjutant for three and a half years. On 25 Feb 1871 he joined the 43rd Assam Light Infantry (later 2nd Bn 8th Gurkha Rifles) He was in the Daphla Expedition of 1874-5 and the Naga Hills from 1879 to 1880. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1881. He became commandant of the 43rd on 12 Aug 1888, and left on 31 Mar 1894 when he was given command of the Allahabad Brigade with the rank of Major-General. He also commanded the Lahore Division. He was made a CB in 1894 and KCB in 1910. He died on 28 July 1923.
