Major-General Alexander Godley was the commander of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force throughout the war. In the Gallipoli campaign this was combined with Australian formations to form the New Zealand and Australian Division and a key kernel of the Anzac formation. He was pessimistic of the chances of success but persevered nonetheless. He did fritter away his men's lives relatively cheaply at times and failed to grasp important strategic opportunities at key times. |
