Cornet John Yates, 1854

Yates was made adjutant one month before Balaklava. He did not take part in the Charge due to temporary illness. He retired as a Captain on half pay in 1859 and died in July 1862. His appearance is not so imposing as Cornet Wilkins. His busby is less shaped and not as tall. He is not wearing the plume, which is correct for campaign dress. Neither is he wearing a pelisse. He has the full dress pouchbelt but his sabretache is the plain black undress one. Compare this with another picture of the same man in full dress: Junior Officer 1856
