7th Dragoons

Shabraque Badge c1750

This badge was worn on the corners of shabraques of Private soldiers of the Queen's Own Dragoons, perhaps since 1727 when they gained that title. Certainly this device was in use c1750 as it can be seen in Morier's painting of that period. The basic shape can also be seen in the prints of 1742 and 1763 although the central cypher is indistinct in those cases. The CR stands for Carolina Regina, the cypher of Queen Caroline the long-suffering wife of George II.
