Major C W M Feilden DSO


Cecil William Montague Feilden was born in Quebec on 13 Jan 1863. He was the son of Lt-General Randle Joseph Feilden and Jean Campbell Hozier. He was a lieutenant in the Greys on 2 Aug 1882 and promoted to captain on 14 Feb 1891. He was appointed extra ADC to Lt-General and Governor of Ireland from 2 Feb 1891 to 17 Aug 1892, and again from 3 Oct 1892 to 31 Oct 1895. He was Private Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief from 1 Nov 1895 to 15 Jan 1897. The photo shows him in the undress uniform of a staff officer. He commanded A Squadron in South Africa. He was gazetted major on 29 Oct 1901, and for the DSO on 4 Nov 1901. He was fatally wounded at the battle at Klippan on 18 Feb 1902 and died on 20 Feb. Klippan was the last battle fought by the Greys in the Boer War and caused many casualties amongst the men of A Squadron.
