2nd Lieutenant William Rollo MC


William Hereward Charles Rollo was born on 23 June 1890. He was the son of Hon Eric Norman Rollo and Constance Maud Hohler. He was the grandson of the 10th Lord Rollo of Duncrub. He was educated at Eton and he graduated from Trinity College Cambridge in 1911. He served in the Scots Greys and won the MC during World War One, reaching the rank of captain. After the war he went into law and was a practicing solicitor in 1921. In World War Two he gained the rank of flying officer in the RAF Volunteer Reserve. In 1917 he married Lady Kathleen Nina Hill, daughter of the 6th Marquess of Downshire. They had 2 children, the eldest, Primula Susan Rollo married David Niven in Sep 1940, although she died in May 1946 after falling down the stairs. Captain Rollo was divorced from Lady Kathleen in 1946 and he married again, to Diana Joan Wrey later that year. He died in a hunting accident on 3 Oct 1962, aged 72.
