2nd Lieutenant Edward Hopton Dyson


Dyson was a junior officer in Lieutenant Charles Cavaye's E Company, 1st Battalion. At the start of the battle of Isandhlwana, on 22nd Jan 1879, he was in charge of a detachment that was positioned at the top of the spur, 500 yards to the west of the rest of E Coy. They later retired to the base of the spur and formed part of the line around the north of the camp. Dyson had joined the regiment in May 1878 and had only served 9 months before he met his end, at the age of 20.
