The Warwickshire Regiment

Private Arthur Vickers VC

Private Vickers managed to survive the First World War by a miracle. The act of bravery that he performed which won him the Victoria Cross was almost suicidal. He was with the 2nd Battalion at Hulloch in France in September 1915. The Warwicks were attacking the German trenches on the 25th but held up by wire. Vickers went forward in broad daylight and cut the wires while standing up. He worked while under heavy fire from rifles, machine guns and artillery. His action inspired and allowed the battalion to succeed in their attack.

Arthur Vickers was born in Aston, Birmingham on 2nd Feb 1882. He reached the rank of sergeant and lived to the age of 62. He died in Birmingham on 27th July 1944.
