The Yeomanry

Officer c1835

The uniform was changed radically in 1833 from the French grey with green facings to scarlet with white facings. Scarlet was the colour worn by the regular light dragoon regiments in the time of William IV who reigned from 1830 to 1837. This drawing is by P W Reynolds who used a sketch made by L E Buckell. Buckell saw the original painting on sale at Fosters on 31st March 1920. There are surviving examples of officers' jackets from this period and they agree with the drawing. The cuff design is especially disinctive, being a red slash flap with 5 silver buttons and silver lace edge, on a white cloth round cuff which has a silver lace edge. The belts are of silver herring-bone pattern lace with a red silk centre. The trousers are dark blue with silver double stripes.
